Materials and tools:

  • 0.5m of cotton print for main cushion
  • Assortment of small floral/print scraps for applique rabbit
  • Applique mat or other heat resistant see-through fabric (we used the Clover Design Pro)
  • Pom pom maker (we used Clover’s, or you can go old-school with a piece of card)
  • Double sided fusible interfacing or wonder tape
  • 1 x 10” zip
  • Coordinating thread

Cutting:

  • From the main fabric (for the cushion):
    • 2 x 13” squares
  • From assorted floral cottons (for the bunny):
    • 2 x ears
    • 1 x head
    • 1 x body
    • 1 x tail
    • 2 x feet

Use brightly coloured thread for your zig zag stitch to help the bunny POP against the background fabric

How to make:

Note: 1cm seam allowance included

1. Trace each appliqué shape and cut out. Cut out each shape in both cotton scraps and fusible interfacing.

2. With your design outline underneath an appliqué mat (or alternative transparent non-stick surface), lay each pattern piece on top – cotton right side up on top of the fusible (see pics A & B). Build up your appliqué rabbit in the following order: feet and ears, then head and body, and finally tail.

3. Place the heat resistant pressing mat on top of the appliqué mat and press so the rabbit is fused together (see pic C).

4. Overlock or machine finish all four edges of each cushion piece (see pic D).

5. Find the centre point and position the appliqué bunny in the centre. Press to fuse (see pic E).

6. With a short stitch length, zig zag stitch around each shape (see pic F).

7. Using an invisible zipper foot, attach the zip to the lower edge of the fabric using your preferred method (see pic G). Using a zipper foot, stitch to the start and end of the zip from the outer edges.

8. Leaving the zip partially open. Sew the remaining three edges of the cushion with a 1cm seam allowance (see pic H). Trim all loose threads. Turn right side out, push corners out and press to finish.
